Despite the toothbrush being a tool people use daily, many are in the dark when it comes to determining which toothbrush is the best option for them. Many people choose the cheapest option, while others choose what looks the most aesthetically pleasing to them. Below is a list of what you should look for when selecting a toothbrush.

Soft vs. Hard Bristles

Many people believe the hard bristles on a toothbrush will be the better option assuming their stiffness will result in better scrubbing, but several dental experts agree the soft bristle is better for removing stubborn plaque. Hard bristle brushes can be tough on teeth and gums. These bristles can damage enamel and irritate gums which can lead to sensitive teeth. Soft bristles with rounded tips are better at removing plaque and bending into hard to reach tooth grooves.

Size & Shape Matter

The size and shape of a toothbrush is not one size fits all. Your mouth may be small while another person’s mouth could be large. Generally, a toothbrush with a smaller head can get into harder to reach places.

Consider Electric

Various studies have shown that most manual and electric toothbrushes can do the same amount of cleaning. However, many people who use manual toothbrushes don’t brush for long enough, or may not have the dexterity or mobility required to be as efficient as the electric brush. If you suffer from arthritis or mobility issues, an electric toothbrush can be an extremely effective aid in maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. Additionally, electric toothbrushes often turn on with specific duration's of time so you know when you’ve brushed long enough and when you have not.
