Our dentists share three things you should keep in mind when enjoying sweets and protecting your teeth:

Why is sugar so bad for your teeth?

Bacteria and sugar have a special reaction to sugar in your mouth. For 20 minutes, acid is produced and attacks your teeth. When bacteria and acid attack your teeth, they are at risk of tooth decay, which impacts the enamel and inner layer of your teeth.

Are some candies worse for your teeth?

Candies and sweets that are sticky or need to be sucked are considered worse for your teeth. This includes candies like taffy, lollipops, gumdrops, toffee, caramel, and more. If you need something sweet but don’t want to risk your oral health, try sticking to soft, easy-to-chew candies.

How can I maintain tooth health?

Our dentists suggest a couple of things you can do to promote and maintain the health of your teeth, including brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, limiting snacks, and eating nutritious meals. You can also visit our dentists for regular cleanings and exams.

Just because you want a beautiful smile doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your treats. If you do enjoy some sweets, make sure you brush your teeth and avoid candies that are harmful.
